A Sanctuary of Elegance: Unveiling the Essence of The Heritage Club - Tripura Castle Hotel and Spa

About The History of The Heritage Club Tripura Castle, Hotel & Spa

Step Into the Living Legacy of Royalty: The Manikya Dynasty

Experience a stay that isn’t just a holiday—it’s a passage through time. The Heritage Club – Tripura Castle is not just a hotel; it is the storied summer retreat of the Manikya Dynasty, one of the world's oldest uninterrupted ruling lineages.

A Dynasty Forged in Legend

The Manikya Kings of Tripura trace their ancestry back to the lunar dynasty (Chandra Vansh), with a history spanning over 500 years and 184 kings. Known as patrons of the arts, fierce protectors of their sovereignty, and visionaries of modern North-East India, the Manikya Maharajas created a culture where tribal traditions met regal sophistication. From the lush plains of Agartala to the mist-covered hills of Shillong, their influence has shaped the region's identity.

The Birth of Tripura Castle: A Royal Sanctuary

In the early 1920s, Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Debbarma—the father of modern Tripura—fell in love with the cool, pine-scented air of Shillong. He chose this very site to build his summer residence, seeking a sanctuary from the tropical heat of the plains. Tripura Castle became more than just a home; it was a diplomatic hub and a creative muse. It was here that the Maharaja hosted dignitaries, thinkers, and artists, including the Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, who shared a profound and historic friendship with the Tripura Royals.

Why History Lives Here?

When you walk through our corridors, you are walking through the private annals of a kingdom:
  • The First Heritage Hotel: We take pride in being the first heritage hotel in North-East India, preserving the sanctity of the original estate.
  • Royal Artifacts: Our walls are adorned with rare photographs, antique furniture, and curios collected by the Maharajas during their world travels.
  • Architecture with a Soul: Built in the unique "Assam-type" style with Art Deco influences, the castle reflects the eclectic taste of a King who was as comfortable in the traditional courts of India as he was in the high societies of Europe.

Your Invitation to the Inner Circle

Today, the castle remains under the stewardship of the Royal Family. It isn't a museum frozen in time; it is a living legacy. As our guest, you don't just observe the history of the Manikya Dynasty—you live within it. Dine where Kings feasted. Walk where Tagore dreamt. Discover the soul of Tripura in the heart of Shillong. "To stay at Tripura Castle is to be a guest of the Maharajas. We invite you to experience the grandeur, the quietude, and the timeless elegance of our ancestral home."

The Modern Visionary: Shri Pradyot Deb Burman

Today, the legacy of the Manikya Dynasty is carried forward by the Titular King His Highness Shri Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Burman, the current titular King and a prominent leader of the North-East. Known to his people as Bubagra, Pradyot is not just a custodian of the past but a modern visionary who believes that history should be felt, not just read.

A King’s Perspective: From Palace to People

Having spent his childhood within the very walls of Tripura Castle, His Highness Shri Pradyot views the property as much more than a business venture. To him, it is a bridge between the regal traditions of his ancestors and the curious travelers of the 21st century.

His vision for The Heritage Club is simple yet profound: To transform royal history into an unforgettable, immersive experience.
"Our ancestors didn't just build structures; they built a culture of hospitality and intellectual depth. My goal is to ensure that when you visit us, you aren't just staying in a room—you are entering our home, sharing our stories, and experiencing the true soul of the North-East."

The Stable Bar:

Steeped in history, The Stable Bar has its own story to tell.

The Maharaja's stables were located where the bar stands today, the original stones of the stable having been left untouched. Showcased in the bar are the swords captured by the Maharaja's soldiers from the Japanese army during World War II. The Royal Tripura Forces was awarded the Burma Star during their campaign against the Japanese in this war. Close to the stable is the tunnel, which was built as a bomb shelter during the same period since Shillong was under the constant threat of being bombed given the Eastern Air Command is based here. The tunnel still stands the test of time.

The Stable Bar is designed as a speakeasy bar to remind us of these untold stories of yesteryears. Today you can indulge in some of the finest curated cocktails here.
